Biochar

Biochar
Biochar is a carbon-rich soil amendment that improves soil structure, enhances nutrient retention, and increases moisture availability in the root zone. Our raw biochar is produced in the UK from sustainably sourced, virgin whole-tree chip and supplied as a fine grade (0–13 mm), making it well suited to potting soil and container applications. Following pyrolysis, the material is water-cooled to minimise dust and improve handling and ease of use.
Due to its high carbon content and porous structure, Biochar adsorbs nitrogen. For optimal results, pre-charge Biochar with a high-nitrogen input before use.
Benefits of Biochar for Your Garden
- Increases Nutrient Retention: Holds essential nutrients in the soil, making them more readily available to plants.
- Improves Soil Structure: Enhances aeration while boosting water retention capacity.
- Supports Beneficial Microbes: Provides a habitat for soil microbes, promoting healthier soil biology.
Additional Advantages
- 100% natural and sustainably sourced.
- Ideal for long-term soil improvement.
- Helps reduce soil acidity over time.
- Sequesters heavy metals.
Application Rates
- Potting Soil Mix: Use 2–8% by volume (3–5% is typical)
- Add once when making a new soil mix
How to Use Biochar
- Immediate Use: Soak Biochar in water with 2–3g/L of Soy Amino Nitrogen or other soluble high-nitrogen input to charge it.
- Soil Mix: Add 2–8% Biochar alongside compost, aeration, media, minerals and amendments. Allow the mix to complete the heating and cooling process. The nutrients released from this process charge the Biochar.
- Co-Composting: Mix into compost piles or worm farms at 5–20%. Biochar becomes charged during composting.
- Microbial Inoculation: Mix with inoculation-grade compost or powdered microbe blends such as Biosys. Pre-charge with soluble nitrogen for best results.
Note: Excessive Biochar applications can lead to nutrient sequestration and reduced nutrient availability.
