Regular fabric beds are made from breathable fabric that allows for excellent air pruning and drainage, but these specific features can create an interesting problem when used with living soils.
Soil in fabric containers dries quickly from the bottom and at the sides. This is generally great for hydroponic style irrigation, where you want quick drying and frequent watering. However, this quick drying at the sides creates a zone of soil that is not good at supporting soil microbial life. Here, the soil can get so dry the microbial communities go dormant or even die, and therefore cannot unlock nutrition from the soil and supply it to the plant. This zone around the edge of the pot is essentially wasted soil, that can be kept moist and allowed to flourish with microbial activity with the help the MoistureLock Liner.
Benefits of Living Soil Fabric Pots & Beds
Reduced Water & Energy Use
By preventing drainage and drying from all sides of the container, Living Soil Fabric Pots & Beds lengthen the wet-to-dry soil cycle. That means less water usage and lower humidity indoors.
Even Moisture + Drainage
Traditional fabric containers drain from all sides, which can cause dry pockets. Our Living Soil Fabric Pots & Beds direct water downward, ensuring even distribution throughout.
Improved Aeration
The 4” aeration strip prevents roots from circling the bottom of the container by allowing air to circulate from below. Our Living Soil Fabric Pots & Beds also encourage soil to dry from the top down, mimicking the way soil dries in nature.
Grassroots are committed to making high quality products, their Living Soil Pots are one of a kind, and the market leader in the USA for growers using living soil.
- BPA-free, waterproof MoistureLock™ liner with incredible benefits.
- Drainage and aeration strip at the bottom.
- USA-made tan coloured fabric for healthy soil and roots.
- Bottom seam sewn on the outside with marine-bonded thread to prevent decay.
- High-quality triple hem on top for added strength.
- Sewn in Northern California with blood, sweat, AND tears. (just kidding)

Product specification
Grassroots Living Soil Beds requires a frame to support them. They come with plastic corner and connection fittings, you can purchase and cut the pipe yourself, or we can supply pre-cut pipe with the bed.
The conectors are made from 1-inch Schedule 40 furniture grade PVC. When sourcing the pipe yourself, make sure the external diameter of the pipe is 33.4mm, in order to fit these connectors. Schedule 40 pipe is quite common in the USA, but less so the UK and EU. A more common pipe in the UK is 1-inch class E pipe, this has the same 33.4mm external diameter but the wall is thinner and therefore offers slightly less strength in comparison. We provide class E pipe as standard for the 3ft beds and schedule 40 for the 4ft beds.
For the beds with trellis fittings and pipe, they come in two trellis height options; 'standard' is 60cm and ‘Tall Trellis’ is 110cm above the bed. You can easily cut down the Tall Trellis pipe work to suit your requirements if needed

FAQ
What are Grassroots Living Soil Beds?
Grassroots Living Soil Beds are high-performance fabric beds designed specifically for living soil systems. They feature MoistureLock™ technology to improve water retention and soil microbial activity, ensuring even moisture throughout the soil and reducing the wet-dry cycle.
How does the MoistureLock™ technology work?
MoistureLock™ is a strip of BPA-free waterproof fabric sewn inside the bed. It directs water downward, preventing dry pockets and promoting even moisture. This helps soil microbial communities thrive by simulating natural soil drying patterns.
What are the benefits of using Grassroots Living Soil Beds?
These beds improve soil microbial activity, reduce water usage, maintain even soil moisture, and prevent root circling. They are reusable and made from super-durable, high-quality fabric in the USA.
Are these beds suitable for indoor and outdoor growing?
Yes, Grassroots Living Soil Beds are versatile and can be used for both indoor and outdoor growing. They are ideal for no-till container growing and help maintain lower humidity indoors by reducing water evaporation.
How do I use Grassroots Living Soil Beds?
rassroots Living Soil Beds require a frame to support them. They come with plastic corner and connection fittings. You can purchase and cut the 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe yourself, or we can supply pre-cut pipe with the bed. Ensure the pipe diameter is 33.4mm with a wall thickness of 3.3mm for proper support.
What size pipe do I need?
The corner and connection pieces are made from Furniture Grade 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC, which has an outer diameter of 33.4mm and a wall thickness of 3.3mm. This type of pipe is quite common in the USA but less so in the UK and EU. An alternative pipe more common in the UK is 1-inch Class E, which also has a diameter of 33.4mm but a wall thickness of 2.2mm, making it less strong than Schedule 40. We recommend using Schedule 40 for horizontal lengths of 4ft or more, but Class E is sufficient for most beds.
Can these beds be reused?
Yes, Grassroots Living Soil Beds are highly durable and can be reused many times. Their robust construction ensures longevity and consistent performance across multiple growing cycles.
How do these beds compare to regular fabric beds?
Unlike regular fabric beds that dry quickly from the sides and bottom, Grassroots Living Soil Beds with MoistureLock™ technology prevent uneven drying. This maintains a healthier environment for soil microbes and supports better plant growth.
Do these beds help in reducing water usage?
Yes, the MoistureLock™ liner reduces the surface area for water evaporation, leading to less water usage. This is particularly beneficial for indoor growers looking to maintain lower humidity levels.
What sizes are available for Grassroots Living Soil Beds?
Grassroots Living Soil Beds come in the following sizes: 1ft x 3ft, 3ft x 3ft, 3ft x 6ft, 2ft x 4ft, 4ft x 4ft, 8ft x 4ft, and 16ft x 4ft. Choose the size that best fits your growing space and needs.
How do I calculate the feeding schedule for my living soil bed?
To calculate the feeding schedule for your living soil bed, use the active soil volume, which is typically around 40% of the recommended volume. For example, for a 2ft x 4ft bed with a recommended volume of 240L, the active volume would be 100L. You can find detailed feeding schedules in the Ecothrive Feed Chart for Living Soil Beds.
How do I top dress and reinvigorate the soil inside the beds?
To top dress and reinvigorate the soil, calculate the active soil volume of your bed and use this quantity as your multiplier for amendments. Regularly add organic matter or compost to the top layer of the soil to replenish nutrients and maintain soil health.
Can I use these beds for hydroponic growing?
Grassroots Living Soil Beds are optimised for living soil systems; they are not designed for traditional hydroponic setups that require frequent watering and quick drying. They are best used with organic, microbial-rich soils that benefit from consistent moisture levels.
Where are these beds made?
Grassroots Living Soil Beds are proudly made in the USA, specifically in Northern California, using high-quality materials to ensure durability and performance.
